Hello, my name is\u00a0Daawood\u00a0and welcome to The\u00a0Darul Arqam.\u00a0 Two years after embracing Islaam,\u00a0 I followed the advice of many brothers in my community and travelled abroad, with the intention of suspending my studies at university for a year and dedicating it\u00a0to Islaamic disciplines. That was in 2002\u00a0and Mauritania has been my home for the past\u00a0ten years.\u00a0 I began my studies at\u00a0Intafasheet, \u00a0a small village devoted to the memorization of Qur\u2019aan, located 50 kilometers outside the capital.\u00a0\u00a0Later I relocated to\u00a0Umm ul-Qura to study various texts i.e. Aqeedah, Arabic, etc.\u00a0For the last two and a half years, I\u2019ve been\u00a0residing here in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania and working as an English teacher.<\/p>\n
Last year, I\u00a0spent Ramadaan\u00a0of 2010 (1431 Hijri) at the Mahdharah (traditional Islaamic school)\u00a0where\u00a0I first began my studies at. It\u2019s from the ways of the salaf\u00a0that they would leave off all studies and focus on the Qur\u2019aan\u00a0during this month. I spent days smiling, \u00a0looking at children who\u2019ve been sent here from various\u00a0parts of the Muslim world to learn the Book of Allaah.\u00a0Many have\u00a0been sent here\u00a0with only the clothes on their backs and a small sack of provisions.\u00a0Looking forward to returning to their homes, villages, and cities as Huffaadh\u00a0ul-Qur\u2019aan. Then desiring to return here once again\u00a0to continue their studies\u00a0in the Arabic language and other sciences of the Deen. Nothing is asked from them except that they work hard and\u00a0be sincere.<\/p>\n
My smiles soon turned into frowns and then tears when I asked myself \u201cwhere are our children?\u201d What programs are we involving \u00a0our\u00a0children in that makes us\u00a0feel free from having to send them\u00a0to places like this? Something has to be done. \u201cWhat can I do?\u201d, I asked. \u00a0After reading a tafsir\u00a0of the ayat \u201cand spend out of what We have provided for them\u201d, I was reminded that provisions aren\u2019t only wealth; it also includes knowledge, position, and other blessings of Allaah. We often get hung up on not having the funds to do the things that need to be done.<\/p>\n
After the\u00a0Eid\u00a0I sought to put a program together for our children. With the help of some brothers with similar plans to meet our similar demands, we\u2019ve come together and founded Darul Arqam. A school from us, for us and by us, and the focus is our youth. For the brothers and sisters who\u2019ve had the opportunities to travel and taste the path of seeking knowledge, you\u00a0 know better than anyone else that\u00a0it doesn\u2019t start\u00a0at adulthood, it starts at childhood.\u00a0 It is said that the education of the youth is like writing in stone whereas the education of the adults is like writing in water.<\/p>\n
When we read the biographies of the scholars of the present and the past, we see that they\u2019ve memorised the book of Allaah\u00a0before reaching the age of maturity. They made sacrifices- no, excuse me- their parents made sacrifices. Their mothers let up their wings, put their trust in Allaah\u00a0and allowed them to go on the path of knowledge. Their fathers supported them morally and financially so that their hearts and bodies would be free to tread the path. They sacrificed for the ummah, for Allaah\u2019s religion.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re ready to put our children in institutions for twelve years of their precious lives, for what? Afterwards what can they do. Put your child twelve years next to a doctor,\u00a0they\u2019re going to be a doctor. Twelve years next to judge,\u00a0they\u2019re going to be a judge. Put them next to a scholar and\u00a0they\u2019re going to be a scholar, by the permission of Allaah. We know the merits of knowledge and we know the hadeeth about the decrease in knowledge and the rise in ignorance.<\/p>\n
